Introduction

What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin condition that speeds up the growth cycle of skin cells, resulting in thick, red, scaly patches that can be itchy and sometimes painful. These patches, commonly known as plaques, are often found on the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back, but they can appear anywhere on the body.

Psoriasis is a non-contagious condition that affects individuals of all ages and ethnicities. It often goes through cycles, with periods of flaring and remission.

Impact of Psoriasis

While not life-threatening, psoriasis can significantly impact a person’s quality of life, causing discomfort, emotional distress, and social stigmatization.

Who Can Get Psoriasis?

Psoriasis can affect anyone, but certain factors increase the risk, including:

  • Family history of psoriasis or other autoimmune conditions
  • Stress
  • Skin injuries or infections
  • Certain medications (e.g., lithium, beta-blockers)
  • Lifestyle factors such as smoking and heavy alcohol consumption

Psoriasis can develop at any age, but it most commonly appears in early adulthood or later in life.

  • Types of Psoriasis:
    • There are five main types of psoriasis, each with distinct presentations:
      • Plaque Psoriasis (Most Common): Red, raised patches with silvery scales, typically affecting elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back.
      • Guttate Psoriasis: Small, teardrop-shaped lesions triggered by infections (often strep throat) and typically appearing on the torso and limbs.
      • Pustular Psoriasis: White pustules on red, inflamed skin, often on hands and feet, but can be generalized. More rare and painful than other types.
      • Inverse Psoriasis: Smooth, red, inflamed patches in skin folds (armpits, groin, genitals), often triggered by friction or moisture.
      • Scalp Psoriasis: Thick, silvery scales on the scalp, sometimes accompanied by hair loss. May extend to the forehead, ears, and neck.

Is Psoriasis Hereditary?

Yes, psoriasis has a hereditary component. If one or both parents have psoriasis, their children have a higher risk of developing the condition.

Key Points:

Family History: A significant number of individuals with psoriasis have a family history of the disease.

Genetic Factors: Multiple genes are associated with psoriasis, indicating a complex genetic predisposition.

Environmental Triggers: Factors such as infections, stress, and lifestyle choices can trigger psoriasis in those genetically predisposed.

What causes Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is caused by an overactive immune system that accelerates skin cell growth. Normally, skin cells grow and shed over a period of a month, but in psoriasis, this process happens in just a few days, leading to the buildup of skin cells.

Triggers:

  • Infections: Strep throat, respiratory infections, and other infectious agents.
  • Injury to the Skin: Cuts, scrapes, sunburn, or other skin trauma.
  • Stress: High stress levels can trigger or worsen psoriasis.
  • Weather: Cold, dry weather can exacerbate symptoms.
  • Medications: Certain drugs can trigger or aggravate psoriasis.
  • Lifestyle Factors: Smoking and heavy alcohol consumption.
